The operating question
Can the complete system produce acceptable output at the intended rate with controlled escalation and recovery?
A practical framework
- Define launch criteria across people, material, equipment, method, measurement and capacity.
- Run representative builds that expose boundary conditions and interface failures.
- Use safe launch, containment and escalation with explicit exit criteria.
What the technical work needs to resolve
A successful trial build may not represent normal material, staffing, cycle time or changeover conditions. Ramp evidence has to state which conditions were demonstrated and which assumptions remain open.
Containment is a temporary risk control. It should have ownership, capacity impact, effectiveness checks and an exit tied to permanent process evidence.
Scale the framework to what is riding on the decision. A narrow issue may need a short evidence review; a production or quality decision may need controlled requirements, representative trials, traceability and formal disposition. In either case, keep assumptions visible so later changes do not quietly invalidate the conclusion.
Common failure modes
- Calling equipment completion production readiness.
- Running trials with hand-selected parts or expert-only staffing.
- Hiding unresolved risk inside generic action lists.
- Removing containment because timing demands it rather than because evidence supports it.
These failure modes are tempting because they create visible activity quickly. The risk begins when activity is mistaken for progress. Close the work only when evidence shows that the requirement, process or decision now behaves as intended.
Use one integrated readiness record linking each open condition to its owner, effect, temporary control, permanent action, evidence and decision authority.
To put the framework into practice, define the owner, controlled inputs, interfaces, expected output, exception path, acceptance criteria and verification record. That turns the insight into something usable in a design review, supplier discussion, production trial or management decision.
